Dr. Jerry Lawler Leaves GCMHP
On 5 February 2001, Dr. Jerry Lawler, an American Clinical Psychologist
and researcher, ended his stay at GCMHP. Dr. Lawler had been
volunteering at GCMHP since 26 September 2000. Dr. Lawler spent almost 5
months conducting a variety of activities. His valuable contributions to
the Programme included clinical supervision and lectures to the staff in
the clinics, assisting in some research activities, writing proposals
and reports, assisting in the theses for some professional pursuing
post-graduate degrees, some administrative and public relations
activities.

Swiss Government to Fund the Women's Empowerment Project
On 11 October, Dr. Eyad El-Sarraj signed an agreement with the Swiss
Development Agency and Cooperation (represented by Dr. Annick Tonti) to
fund GCMHP's Women's Empowerment Project. The agreement calls for
partial funding to the Project retroactive September 2000 and ending in
December 2001.

Fundraising for Victims of Israeli Violence
On 13 October, Dr. Eyad El-Sarraj participated in the fundraising
campaign entitled "For Al-Aqsa" organized by Abu Dhabi television. The
event gathered donations for the injured and families of the martyrs of
the Al-Aqsa Intifada. A large number of religious figures, academics,
and artists from various Arab countries attended the fundraiser which
collected $US 30,000,000.

25th Anniversary Commemorating the Martyrs of the Norwegian Leftist
Socialist Party
On 21, 22 October, Dr. Eyad El-Sarraj attended the 25th anniversary
meeting held for the martyrs of the Leftist Socialist Party of Norway.
During the meeting, Dr. El-Sarraj talked about the situation in
Palestine, and Palestinian's right to freedom, ending the occupation,
and establishing an independent state.

On 4 September, GCMHP organized a workshop entitled "Right to Health"
for GCMHP staff members.

A Delegation from Grassroots International (USA) Visits GCMHP
On 13 September 2000, a delegation of 12, including members of Board, from Grassroots
International (GI) visited the GCMHP's Jabalia clinic.
The medical team at the Jabalia clinic and the Public Relations
Coordinator met the guest and gave them comprehensive information about
the activities of the clinic, especially the Project for Rehabilitating
Survivors of Human Rights Violations that is partially funded by GI.
In
addition, there was a thorough discussion of the socio-economic
situation and hardships endured by the Gaza population.

Tel Aviv University Professor Ruvi Dar Teaches the Clinical Psychology
Module
From 22-26 July 2000, Professor Ruvi Dar from Tel Aviv University
visited GCMHP to teach the Clinical Psychology module to the first-year
post-graduate diploma in community mental health and human rights.
The
aim of the course is to teach students to recognize and know how to
treat anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorders.
The course discussed
specific phobias, social phobia, panic disorder, agoraphobia, PTSD,
obsessive-compulsive disorder, compulsive spectrum disorders.
