Out-service training
 
A. Mental Health nursing course:
This course started in the beginning of April 1997, an agreement GCMHP and the faculty of education was reached to train 15 male and female nurses who have BA. In nursing and work in clinics and hospitals in the Gaza Strip. The course lasted for 6 months with average of 175 hours.
B. Kinder Garden Teachers Course
This course was conducted for teachers working in kinder garten. The number of participants was 15 women for 3 months. Members of HRT conducted lectures in this course.
C. Counseling Course
In cooperation with Beir Zeit University, an 8 months a training course for counselors started on December 1997. The number of participants was 20. A member of HRT conducted lectures in this course.
Changes in the project frame work.
There were no changes in the project frame work, however political situation in the country is getting worse due to difficulties and restrictions in the implementation of peace accord. The Israeli government still dictating the Palestinian Authority to detain those who oppose peace agreement? As a result hundreds of Palestinians still captured by Palestinian Authority. The question of Palestinian prisoners in the Israeli prisons is still one of the most difficult problem being discussed by Israeli and Palestinian delegations.
 Institutional support provided

 
Fourteen visits have been delivered to different institutions for the purpose of cooperation and networking. As a result some torture victims have been referred for rehabilitation in GCMHP clinics, but to lack of well organized referral system in our data base system, the number of those cases were not documented. This issue well is tackled in the new data information system, which will be ready and implemented in 1998.
 
- On 3rd August 1997, Mr Hassan Zyada visited Ex-political prisoners Rehabilitation Centre to arrange social support for cases treated in our clinics.
- On 19th August, Mr Hassan Ziada attended a meeting with MSF representative from Hebron, which was held in GCMHP. He explained the activities of HRC and rehabilitation of VHR.
 -On 7th, 27th October Saber El Neirab visited three centres
1.Centre for rehabilitation of the physically handicapped (Jabalia) for provision of aids to VHR cases.
2. Never forget me centre for cooperation.
3. El Omaria Medical Centre for referral of cases to our clinic.
 - On 16th October, Dr Abdel Aziz Thabet had a meeting with Chairman of Near East Churches to discuss referral of VHR to GCMHP.
 
-On- 23rd October 1997, Mr Ahmad Abu Tawahina attended a meeting on United Nations Commission for Human Rights office in Gaza. A courses for police commanders will conducted in group work, leadership, personality development in cooperation with United Nations Commission for Human Rights, GCMHP, and Police administration.
 
- On 29th October, Dr Abdel Aziz Thabet attended a meeting on GCMHP which was arranged by Save the Children (UK) with Mr. Halinen, Special Reporter of the Commission on Human Rights United Nations Centre for Human Rights. This meeting was held with participation of NGO’s working in the field of children.
Dr. Thabet explained the effect of closure on human rights of Palestinian children.
- On 10th November 1997, Ibraheem Abu Nada and Saber El Neirab visited UNRWA Social Welfare Centre in Jabalia to arrange social support to two ex-political prisoners
- On 10th November 1997, Ibraheem Abu Nada and Saber El Neirab visited Rehabilitating Centre for VHR in Jabalia. to arrange financial aids to two of ex-political prisoners.

- On 22nd November 1997, Dr. Tyser Diab and Ibraheem Abu Nada visited Rehabilitating Centre for VHR in Jabalia for signing contract for one ex-political prisoners.

- On 25th November 1997 Anwar Wadi and Abdel Hammed Moharib visited

Rehabilitating Centre for VHR in Dear El Balah for financial support of one of our patient and finding a job for another one

- On 1st December, Saber El Nairab visited El Toufah Society for teaching illiterates to cooperate in the field of using the place for public meetings and referring cases of VHR to our clinics.

- On 3rd December Ibraheem Abu Nada visited Rehabilitating Centre for VHR in Jabalia for cooperation.

- On 14th December Ibraheem Abu Nada visited Rehabilitating Centre for VHR in Jabalia to find a job for one of our patients.

- On 20th December Ibraheem Abu Nada visited Rehabilitating Centre for VHR in Jabalia for cooperation and coordination.

- On 22nd December, Saber El Neirab visited Rehabilitating Centre for VHR in Jabalia. for cooperation and coordination See Annex 7.

General public awareness

Human rights committee members had conducted the following activities:

- On 10th August 1997, Ahmad Abu Tawahina conducted a Journal interview with Elhaiah on the subject “closure and it’s effect on Palestinians”

- On 2nd September 1997, Ziad Awad conducted a public meeting as conducted in Activity Centre (Rafah). The subject was “family mental health”. The attendants were 70 women.

- On 13th September 1997, Ahmad Abu Tawahina conducted a Journal interview with Elhaiah Journal with title of “ Mental Health in the Gaza Strip”.

- On 30th September, Hassan Zyada conducted meeting in YMCA. The subject was “violence in Palestinian Society”. The attendants were 30 women.

- On 7th October 1997, Ziad Awad conducted meeting in Social Rehabilitation Centre in South area (Khan Younis). The subject was “Counseling”. The attendants were 40 women.

- On 9th October, Ziad Awad conducted another meeting in Sunrise and Hope Centre (Khan Younis). The subject was “Violence in the Palestinian Society”. The attendants were 30.

-On 13- 15th October, Third International Conference” Health and Human Rights” all the members participated in this conference. See attached report

 
- On 28th October, in Cooperation with Palestinian Youth Ministry Hasssan Zyada conducted a meeting in Youth Club in Jabalia. The subject was “violence in Palestinian society”. The attendants were 50 women.
 
- On 29th October, Dr. Tyser and Saber conducted meeting in Women Centre (Jabalia). The subject was “The concept of mental illness”. The attendants were 40 women.
- On November 10,1997 Mr.Anwar Wadi participated in the day of in Prisoners Supporting Day in which he participated in the strike infront of the Red Cross and in a March to the Palestinian Counsel.
 
- On November 10,1997 Dr.Abdel Aziz Thabet and Mr.Ziad Awad conducted a lecture entitled “violence and children” for kindergarten teachers in Red Crescent Society in Khan Younis. The number of attendants was 30.
 
- On November11, 1997 Mr. Anwar Wadi conducted a lecture entitled “The Social Development” for kinder garten teachers in GCMHP.
- On November 17,1997 Dr.Abdel Aziz Thabet and Mr.Anwar Wadi attended the opening ceremony for Kamal Edwan Rehabilitation of VHR Center
- On November 20,1997 Mr.Hassan Zyada and Mr.Anwar Wady conducted one public meeting entitle “Torture” in Service Club in El Maghazi. The attendants were 50.
- On November 22nd Dr. Abdel Aziz Thabet conducted a public meeting entitled” Violence of Palestinian Children” In Jabalia New Clinic -Jabalia. The attendants were 30 women.

- On 10th December, Mr Ahmad Abu Tawahina conducted a public meeting in El Nagdal School (Gaza) entitled “ Stress and Coping”. The number of attendants was 30.

- On 27th December, Mr Ahmad Abu Tawahina conducted a public meeting in El Nagdal School (Gaza) entitled “ Social support network”. The number of attendants was 30. See Annex 8.

As a response to the above mentioned public meetings and discussion followed, some of the attendants have been advised to visit GCMHP clinics for treatment. Others had demonstrated that the discussion was very fruitful and helpful in terms of coping with daily life.

We will be able to evaluate the effects of those meetings on general public through a new data base program, which is in process of preparation for this purpose.

Media activities

10 different articles have been published in newspaper interviews. Issues tackled were related to certain phenomena in Palestinian society (e.g., torture and its effects, domestic violence and crime in Palestinian society, and rehabilitation of human rights victims.
