Watching a Documentary Film
Ahmad is 9 years old. He came to the clinic accompanied by his mother who said that "her child is suffering from the problem of bed-wetting". The mother stated that his problem started when a teacher in his school showed the students a documentary film of a teacher who was killed by Israeli soldier and how the head of that teacher exploded by the bomb. After Ahmad watched this film, his family observed the changes in his behavior. He became more aggressive and nervous, always shouting, afraid to go outside alone, absent-minded most of the time, always trying to find reasons for not going to school by pretending sick, his school achievements declined sharply. He also suffered nightmares where the content of such dreams were Israeli war planes, tanks, and soldiers killing people. The child is preoccupied with the scene of the teacher killing. The child started to wet his bed, became more aggressive, and showed low academic achievement The mother states that around one year ago, her child suffering from bed-wetting and sometimes dribbling of urine during day time. In the beginning, this bedwetting was daily. But nowadays, it is 2-3 times daily. In addition, he is complaining from abdominal pain, headache, foot pain, and he became so nervous shouting always with or without reason. When the family observed this change to their child's behavior, they consulted a neurologist; they did all the investigation needed, with no organic abnormality was detected. So, the physician prescribed for him some medication. After taking the drug, the daytime dribbling of urine cured; but the night bed-wetting remained. Ahmad was born in Rafah. He is a refugee. He has one brother and two sisters. He is the eldest son. The family has poor economic status; his relations with others were normal. But, now, he is withdrawn and avoids going outside the home. The therapy that was given was catharsis, education, support and cognitive behavioral therapy. School visits were also conducted to follow up with the teachers regarding the intervention with the child. After the sessions, the child's behavior of bed-wetting was reduced. Now, he is still coming to the clinic for follow up sessions. |
