Press Release

Gaza Community Mental Health Programme Denounces Internal Fighting and Calls for Acceleration of Forming a National Unity Government

Over the past two days, the Gaza Strip witnessed several incidents of clashes between different security forces which resulted in killing 12 citizens and injuring over 150. The incidents extended to include attacks on public and private institutions and properties, as well as attacks on local journalists and media personnel in the Gaza Strip and West Bank.

The internal fighting represents a red line that should not be passed whatsoever the circumstances. As a result, we call for an immediate halting of all forms of armed activities in the streets. We also call upon all responsible political parties and intellectuals to assume their roles and responsibilities and stopping such events ensuring that it does re-occur in the future. Moreover, we call for forming a neutral investigation committee to uncover the surrounding circumstances for the ignition of such events and hold the responsible parties accountable before the law.

If these events are to continue, it will lead the Palestinian community into a circle of violence and counter-violence, which will bring nothing but dragging Palestinians into more conflicts. Such conflicts will feed into achieving the goals of the enemies of Palestinians, represented by implanting seeds of sedition and fragmentation in the Palestinian community, something that the enemies were unsuccessful in achieving with all their means over the past few decades.

We believe that such incidents spread an atmosphere of fear, tension, and congestion in the Palestinian streets, which will negatively impact Palestinian citizens' feelings of security for themselves and their families. Consequently, their ability to cope with their daily life conditions will be affected in a negative manner, particularly with the continuation of all forms of Israeli assaults on the Palestinians as well as the international unjust siege with all its intense ramifications at the economical, social, and psychological levels.

We believe that the outburst of this crisis is basically due to the absence of political agreement over forming a national unity government of Fattah and Hamas movements. Consequently, we call upon all conflicting Palestinians parties to speed up the process in joining into a deep and serious national dialogue to reach positive outcomes regarding the formation of a national unity government, considering that such agreement will be the sole guarantee to stop the Palestinian bloodshed and coming out of the Palestinian cause and Palestinians to a safe shore in order to break the international siege on the Palestinian community.

We also call upon all conflicting parties to adhere to the morals and patience in favoring national interests over their factional benefits.
