An Air strike
Huda is 14 years old, refugee, living in Deir El-Balah camp with her parents and nine brothers and sisters. She finished the third grade of school. She came to GCMHP clinic and the main complaint as presented by the mother was that "she is pulling up her eyebrows and eye lids hair frequently". The problem began a year before directly after Israeli warplanes shelled a Palestinian military site, near their home in the beach of the Deir el-Balah. At that point, the child was terrified. The child became anxious, and later developed these signs of hair pulling of her eyebrows and eye-lids, which affected her physical appearance. The family reacted to that by physically punishing the child. But, this had no effect. Her elder sister, asked her to change her behavior of pulling her eyebrows hair by pulling the leg hair instead. All these measurements were without results. The child is engaged in this hair pulling behavior when she is alone; when she in the bathroom; and when she goes to sleep, day and night. According to her mother, the child's development was normal and showed normal behavior, up to the point of strikes nearby their home. She added that the developmental history and pregnancy were normal; but, the child was weak and doesn't eat well as her siblings. Her academic performance was good, but, in the last grade, it was lower than usual, she got poor marks. She lives in a nuclear family with her father and mother in poor house in the camp. She has two small sisters from her mother and 7 brothers and sisters from a step mother. She has low social relations with others around her. The child visited GCMHP and was interviewed by the professionals. After a thorough investigation, it was found that she is suffering from this problem of hair pulling as a result of her exposure to a traumatic event. She is expressing anxiety as a result of the air strike of the military site. Huda is diagnosed as having Trichotillomania. At GCMHP community cenetr, the professionals used behavioral therapy techniques in order to assist her to reduce her maladaptive behavior. |
