RUBBLE IN THE ROOM OF SOMAYA

Somaya is a 12 years old girl who lives in the northern part of Gaza in Jabalia camp. She visited the Gaza Community Center two weeks right after the attack which targeted their home by an Israeli rocket. When she visited the Center, Somaya stated; "I'm dying everyday as I remember the horror and terror of the extreme sound of the explosives of the rocket… I wish I died better than these moments".

Somaya's parents said that on October 30th 2007, the Israeli army fired a rocket nearby her house. As Somaya was lying in her room, she was awakened by an extreme explosive sound, where her room was filled by the rubble resulting from the rocket. Her room walls cracked and dust was spread all over the place. Right after this incident, Somaya started to suffer from frequent tension and anxiety, difficulty in concentration, frequent flashbacks of the event, bed-wetting, poor appetite, alertness and nervousness, and feelings of despair and loss of hope.

Somaya lives with her parents and 5 siblings in a small house. Her father, 37 years old has been unemployed for the last 7 years. He feels terrible as he was not available to comfort Somaya at the time of the incident. He is much occupied with the safety of his children as well as fearing about the health conditions of his children resulting from the rocket. He is also feeling devastated as a result of the damage to his house. Somaya's brothers; (Yousef 3-years-old, Mahmoud 1-year-old) have difficulty in sleeping at night and screaming almost all day, particularly in the first two weeks following the incident. Both of them refuse to eat as normal; in addition, Yousef keeps talking about the terrible things he saw at the time of the explosion and remembering the event over and over again. Huda, 13-years-old; Mohammed 8-years-old and Mohand 5 years old complain of severe pain in their ears resulting from the loud noise.

Somaya was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and received treatment by GCMHP team. The treatment involved Psycho-education counseling; Family counseling; and Relaxation training.

After few sessions, Somaya has shown some improvement in the symptoms. She is less frightened and irritable. She is able to concentrate on her schooling much better than before. Now, the mental health worker conducts regular home visits in order to ensure that she is adjusting with her family.
